Mourinho knows they were over-reliant on the injured ex-Swedish striker's goals and wants more support for this season's main man Romelu Lukaku.

The likes of AC Milan and LA Galaxy have been mentioned as potential destinations for Ibrahimovic once he regains full fitness, but Mourinho admitted on Friday that he hasn't ruled out the possibility of the former Sweden worldwide returning to Old Trafford in January to bolster his options.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said he is looking for new players but, as Chelsea and Leicester showed in the past two campaigns, there are benefits to having a consistent line-up.

"After there were quite a lot of people surrounding him and taking photos - it's not what we're used to". I'm not in a position to say I'm not happy.

"We were focused on the striker scoring goals and when it didn't happen we were in trouble". He's made history everywhere with Porto, Inter and now he can do it with Manchester United.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admits that he needs to discover more goalscorers in his side ahead of the new Premier League season. Regardless of his age, the unwavering will to win is as strong as it has ever been.

That bitter pill was given a spoonful of sugar in the form of an FA Cup triumph over London rivals Chelsea and, with veteran manager Arsene Wenger's contract situation finally resolved, fans will hope for a more consistent campaign this time around.

But O'Neill - who will spend this season on loan with third-tier Fleetwood Town - Brad Smith, Adam Federici (Bournemouth) and Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace) combined for just 11 games and six starts.

Mourinho acknowledged this week that Real Madrid's Gareth Bale was out of reach after the Welshman started for the Spanish side in their 2-1 European Super Cup win over United. The only option Mourinho could truly call upon was Marouane Fellaini, brought on because the Red Devils had no other options that could make an impact on the game.

Mourinho has spent £147 million to bring Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Lindelof to Old Trafford.

Champions Chelsea could give a debut to Spain striker Alvaro Morata at home to Burnley, while last season's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, who have yet to sign any players in the transfer window, visit promoted Newcastle United on Sunday. The lack of alternate forward options once again saw Mourinho's team fall short.

"Jose is one of the best in the world".

The likelihood is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return to Manchester United in January.

The buzz may have gone but the biggest question before the coming season remains whether two of the highest-profile managers in the world can deliver on all the hype surrounding them. Luke Shaw will miss the opening month of the season through injury - leaving Daley Blind to most likely feature, although Matteo Darmian looms large.
