Super-sub Olivier Giroud struck a late victor as Arsenal came from behind to beat Leicester in an unforgettable opening Premier League match. "We have many games and hopefully, I can give them games", Wenger said during his post match conference.
The France global came off the bench to head home in the 85th minute as the Gunners started their season with a thrilling 4-3 win.
However, Arsenal's makeshift back three of Sead Kolasinac, Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding failed to stop Shinji Okazaki equalising just two minutes later.
The Gunners got off to the flawless start, with record-signing Alexandre Lacazette scoring after just 94 seconds, via his his first-ever shot in the Premier League.
"I don't know whether it was a lack of concentration or just a lack of game management in the last ten minutes, but you then concede again from a set play in terms of being overpowered".
"Character wise, we have been great tonight".
The Serie A side have now said they will not increase their offer and Shakespeare is happy to have Mahrez in the team. "He is a fantastic guy as well - committed, he loves the club". I opened the door for him because I know it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go.
"Not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, b ut as well in the group - he has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he chose to stay".
"With the third goal, also after a corner, (Jamie) Vardy's header was nice, but we were there and we had enough time to find our place".
Lacazette is the seventh Arsenal player to score on his first Premier League appearance. I got back late, I should have handled this better.
"We went for a win and we deservedly earned it".
Now with a weird back four of (from right to left) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal pushed for an equaliser, and on 83 minutes it came.
