"As we mourn Bryan's passing, we celebrate his many contributions to the game - as well as his courage". He had been battling stage-4 colon cancer for about three years. Prior to the 2016 season, he stepped down as Senators GM to take on an advisory role in the organization during his treatment.
Murray was with the Red Wings from 1990-93 and remained as GM during Scotty Bowman's first season as coach in '93-94. In 2007, he led Ottawa to its first appearance in a Stanley Cup Final.
The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time.
That tournament was a controversial one as going into the final game of the round-robin, Peterborough had clinched first place overall and with a win over the Quebec champs from Cornwall would play the Pats in the final which would be played at the Agridome. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family who I was lucky to meet many of and spend time with".
A former student of Macdonald College at McGill University, Murray spent four years as the athletic director and coach at the school.
He was sacked during the 1989-1990 season and replaced by his brother, Terry Murray.
"I talked to hockey people all over the country, then I met [Murray] yesterday for the first time", the Capitals' owner told The Washington Post's Bob Fachet upon hiring Murray, then 38, in November 1981. It's worth mentioning that Murray's fourth season as Sens Head Coach was when he replaced John Paddock as the clubs coach in the 2007-08 National Hockey League season.
After breaking into coaching - only on a part-time basis - with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Junior Hockey League, Murray was offered a head coaching role with the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats. In his second year as Sens coach in 2005-06, the Senators finished the season with a 52-21-9 record. He was inducted into the Senators Ring of Honor on January 24. His 620 wins are 12-most all-time among coaches.
"The ultimate achievement in sport is to be recognized at the very top of the game and I know that winning a Cup is the ultimate goal for all of us and it's a great achievement, but I think when you help develop people, influence people, do things for the game, in the game, be involved in your community those are all things that are ... maybe just as important", he said.
