Miami Marlins president David Samson confirmed that the team has reached a sales agreement with a group that includes Derek Jeter.

Jeter will run the baseball and business operations departments. The person said Major League Baseball has been told the sale price will be about $1.2 billion to the group, which includes more than 10 entities.

Sherman is being designated the control person, but he's 69 and it isn't clear how much day-to-day involvement he seeks.

Specifically, Jeter said he would like to be an owner like the late George Steinbrenner, whom Jeter played under for 16 seasons.

The MLB ownership committee will review the transaction Wednesday at an owners' meeting in Chicago, Samson said Saturday. The owners of the other Major League Baseball franchises will have to meet and approve the agreement, which will not take place for at least a month.

Sherman spent much of his financial career in NY and has a home in Naples, Florida. "[Jeter] has a great relationship with Sherman, who will allow Jeter to essentially run the organization". I would love to stay here. They'v all come together to purchase the team from current owner Jeffrey Loria for approximately $1.2 billion dollars.

That's why Jeter needs a team to pull it off.

"So Jeter's going to run the Marlins, huh?"

Loria, 76, has always been criticized for his frugal ways and for the public financing that helped build 5-year-old Marlins Park.

Jeter resides in Tampa and has long had interest in owning a franchise.

"I think time will show that through thick or thin, his commitment to Miami never wavered", Samson said.
