"One of the lads on the pitch said "that mustn't have been good for you" but I said "no, listen, I need to go through this" because after you've been out for a while, you need those tackles earlier on than later because sometimes you think about it", explained Shaw.

"It wasn't to be but we've got very important games this season with Champions League, big Premier League games and cup games so there are a lot of games and I'll be ready when the manager calls on me".

The young England worldwide said he was feeling good with his starting place and ready to move forward.

'Whenever that is, I'm really looking forward to it.

"I was very happy to get 60 minutes tonight". Michael Carrick and Ashley Young haven't been involved yet but have that experience to slot back in and be trusted, while Chris Smalling and David de Gea also have that experience of winning the league. "I feel very good and hopefully I can push on now, keep myself fit and get stronger and stronger".

There have been various murmurs over the close season linking United with a move for a full-back to add further high-level competition on the left side of defence, but with the deadline nearing it is clear that Mourinho is content with the squad he has, save for the potential late addition of Ivan Perisic as another attacking option.

Mourinho wasn't in attendance to see his players' return opting to instead watch Man City take on Everton at the Etihad, but is sure to be pleased that both managed 58 minutes after an aim of playing 45-60.
