The 22-year-old last appeared in a United shirt against Swansea City in April and has been on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury.

Shaw's three seasons at United have been significantly hindered by injury and fitness issues.

The United boss is anxious to secure a move for a new wide player, and having chased after Ivan Perisic all summer to no avail, he chose to switch his focus over to signing a player in another area that needs improvement - left-back.

Mourinho is believed to be keen on signing Tottenham defender Danny Rose and reports this week have linked United with a swap deal involving Shaw moving to north London.

The England worldwide has come in for criticism from United boss Jose Mourinho in the past, but his representative, Jonathan Barnett, says he is going nowhere. "Manchester United love him and Luke Shaw loves Manchester United", Barnett told the International Business Times. The Portuguese tactician had earlier said he was hopeful that Shaw could be back in action in September.

Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind are likely to fill in for Shaw at left-back in his absence, although manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that the England worldwide could be back in action next month. The likes of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, and Ashley Young have all played there, but Mourinho is eager to find a player naturally suited to it.
