Alex Wood the southpaw pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers has taken over as the ace for the team in the absence of Clayton Kershaw.

Wood had acknowledged his next start might be in jeopardy. Wood, who is 14-1 with a 2.41 ERA, is out with inflammation in the sternoclavicular joint in front of his left shoulder.

"The cost of trying to get him through it versus the upside, I just think it's smart to be on the cautious side", manager Dave Roberts said.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' ride to dominant status this season has included plenty of work from Cody Bellinger, but baseball's best team will have to operate without its dynamic rookie for the time being.

Wood has had this same issue before during his career including this past May when the Dodgers put him on their 10-day disabled list.

The usual ace for the Dodgers, Kershaw still leads the NL in wins with 15 while he has only two losses.

The Dodgers made the moves before playing at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night and recalled right-handed pitchers Josh Ravin and Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ravin has been up twice this season, recording one save and posting a 3.38 earned-run average in 5 1/3 innings over four appearances.

The Dodgers are now 88-35 and have run away with the NL West division.
