Summary: New Delhi: A sanitation worker died and three others were injured while cleaning sewage in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital here on Sunday. The victim identified as Rishipal died soon after he was admitted to the hospital.
On August 12, two brothers died of suffocation while cleaning a septic pit at a mall in Shahdara in east Delhi. The workers had gone inside the sewer and inhaled toxic fumes and were later found unconscious there.
When contacted, the medical superintendent of LNJP hospital, Dr J C Passey, said, "I am on leave as I am unwell". Three people are also hospitalised in the incident.
The PWD department had allotted a sanitation work to a private contractor.
It is 10th such death in Delhi in just over a month.
On August 6, three sanitation workers have died due to asphyxiation while cleaning a drain in southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar.
Recently, the DJB's employee union urged the chief minister to prevent such incidents by not engaging untrained workers under contractors for cleaning sewage.
