Officials issued an advisory as a precaution measure because they "cannot verify that the solar eclipse glasses and viewers meet all requirements to safely view the Eclipse". Failure to do that could lead to serious eye damage.
Looking directly at the sun is extremely unsafe, damage to the retina occurs in a few seconds and is not reversible. When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth.

The sun will be obscured 72 percent in Lubbock and 78.4 percent in Amarillo. Though the path of totality is rather small, the entire United States will experience a partial eclipse, including Minnesota.
The Silverton is one of the Vegas casinos getting into the eclipse party act, including 1,000 free pairs of solar eclipse glasses to their first guests starting their box office at 8 a.m. Monday.
Crestview Hills - Thomas More College will host a solar eclipse viewing party at the BB&T Observatory. The projection of the eclipse will then appear in as a crescent in the shadow. Due to the excitement around the event, many stores like Best Buy, Toys "R" Us and London Drugs have sold out of their glasses, which sell for about $3 each. Using any other type of glasses or filters may result in loss of vision or permanent blindness.
Kopp added that the risk of eye damage during an eclipse is reduced during the brief period when the sun is completely covered by the moon. The event will include solar-themed snacks, music, and safe viewing of the eclipse.
"If you've got pets running around and not staring at the sun, you don't need to worry about [eye protection]", he says.
