Williams had previously broken her silence on the incident on social media, saying: "I am devastated and heartbroken by this accident".
But when a reporter asked the 37-year-old to comment about the accident, she couldn't hold back her tears.
The daughter of 78-year-0ld victim Jarome Barson's daughter Audrey Gassner-Dunayer has accused Williams of being reckless and careless in documents filed in Palm Beach County. I'm completely speechless.' Venus said it was something unexpected and Obviously unintentional: 'Life, you can't prepare for everything.
The five-time Wimbledon champion returned shortly afterwards to finish off the compulsory media briefing.
She was focused enough on court against Mertens, but it quickly became clear the press conference wasn't going to be so easy to deal with.
"I've definitely played a lot of tennis. I think she misses me", Venus said. "You know, it gives me joy".
"This is my 20th Wimbledon". The accident remains under investigation and Williams has not been charged yet. That's all I can say about it.
According to the police report, Linda Barson told police she was travelling west in the right lane and approaching an intersection, slowing for a traffic light.
The report says the light changed to green, and Barson said she drove through the intersection when Williams' 2010 Toyota Sequoia cut across in front of her auto.
At such a traumatic time, the seven-time Grand Slam victor admitted she would have loved to be able to spend more time with her sister Serena.
She easily beat Mertens 6-3 6-1 in the third round at Roland Garros, but they were evenly matched in an entertaining first set before the Wimbledon debutant sliced a backhand into the net to settle the tie-break.
Venus also said she was missing her sister Serena who is on a break from the game while she is pregnant.
