The Minnesota Twins are close to acquiring left-hander Jaime Garcia from the Atlanta Braves, sources told FanRag Sports on Thursday.
Contributing to the probability that this trade goes through soon, the Braves scratched AAA pitcher Aaron Blair from a planned start, presumably so he could slot in for Garcia's next start once the deal is done. With him being a rental for the rest of the season and a free agent after 2017, a marginal prospect should get the deal done.
The Twins, just a half-game out of first place in the AL Central, may be close to shoring up their biggest weakness: starting pitching. That run differential has been hurt by a 4.91 ERA from the starters, the seventh-worst total in the league.
Garcia is a free agent after this season and now sports a 3-7 record in 17 starts with a 4.33 ERA. Minnesota reportedly would send Atlanta only minor league talent in the deal. Garcia joins a Twins rotation that now consists of Ervin Santana, Jose Berrios, Kyle Gibson, Adalberto Mejia and Colon.
Garcia, 31, has pitched well for Atlanta this season after being acquired over the winter from the St. Louis Cardinals. However, after winning 13 games in each of his first two full major league seasons in 2010 and 2011 - and helping the Cardinals win the 2011 World Series - injuries temporarily derailed his career. In his time with St. Louis, Garcia was 62-45 with a 3.57 ERA in 158 appearances.
