Over the past week, Trump had made obvious his annoyance that twisting Attorney General Jeff Sessions' arm won't do anything.
"An honorable man whom I have known since his days as a U.S. attorney in Alabama, Jeff Sessions has recently become your piñata in one of the most outrageous - and profoundly misguided - courses of presidential conduct I have witnessed in five decades in and around the nation's capital", Starr said. Sessions recused himself from decision-making related to the Russia investigation after it was revealed that he offered untrue testimony during his Senate confirmation hearings about meetings with the Russian ambassador.
Kenneth Starr, who also served as United States solicitor general and a federal judge, urged Trump to "cut it out" and said his behavior is damaging to the presidency and inimical to the rule of law.
Limbaugh asserted that Sessions is "exactly the kind of guy Trump needs" in his cabinet and wondered if Trump's criticisms of Sessions are actually meant to be motivational. Wray is waiting to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
"You can be disappointed in someone but still want them to continue to do their job", Sanders said.
Sessions was the first leading elected Republican to endorse Trump's candidacy and became one of his most loyal supporters. On Tuesday, the Justice Department said it would now withhold grant money from so-called "sanctuary cities" - communities that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
For Sessions, the anti-gang mission was a way to show his priorities are Trump's priorities after days of being upbraided by the president in the most public fashion.
"I think very highly of him". "I think that's a violation".
Sessions, a former state attorney general, built a reputation during 20 years in the Senate as a hardliner on immigration who often butted heads with GOP leaders. He got behind Trump's 2016 campaign when other politicians, even in Alabama, were staying away. The two rarely speak and Sessions has been kept out of meetings.
In Congress, Republican Sen.
Trump has now denigrated that moment, too, suggesting Sessions only endorsed him when he saw so many Trump voters in the audience. Richard Shelby said he called Sessions and spoke with him for several minutes.
