Thammanoon Niyomtrong aka "Knockout CP Freshmart" of Thailand knocked down Filipino challenger Rey Loreto in the 10th round en route to a unanimous decision victory to successfully defend his WBA world minimumweight title Saturday afternoon in Chonburi, Thailand. The La Trinidad, Benguet-based boxer effectively used his range against the champion leading to the latter's left eye swell badly. Scores: Ferlin Marsh, 117-110; Ignacio Robles, 115-113; and Takeshi Shimakawa 117-110 all favor for the undefeated Thai.
Niyomtrong scored a knockdown in the ninth round when referee Rafael Ramos administered the count on Loreto, who apparently was more off-balanced than staggered by a right from the champion. Loreto was not seriously hurt, and finished the round as the aggressor, but it was clear at that point that the Davao City native Loreto would need something dramatic to pull out the fight.
It was blow-by-blow war in which the stronger Niyomtrong dished out a higher volume of blows over the courageous former IBO world champion Loreto who was dropped down and counted during the battle, although he got up to continue the relentless fight till the end of the actions.
Both fighters weighed in at the 105-pound weight limit on Friday.
