Jamie Clarke's goal in the last minute of normal time saw Armagh into round four of the qualifiers after a 1-17 to 1-15 win over Tipperary in the first ever championship meeting between the sides.
However as Tipp exhausted, Armagh hit seven of the next nine scores to lead and Jamie Clarke's late soccer-style goal sealed their victory.
Tipp kept their noses in front through most of the first quarter.
The visitors had right to feel aggrieved when on 20 minutes referee Paddy Neilan disallowed a Gavin McParland goal, instead opting to call back the play for a foul on McParland by Emmet Moloney. Ultimately, Armagh came from two points down at half-time to win by the same margin, with the main talking point of the second-half the unusual decisions made by referee Paddy Neilan, specifically his interpretation of the advantage rule.
Robbie Kiely and Conor Sweeney were involved as Quinlivan blasted his shot past Blaine Hughes and into the Armagh net.
Armagh were first off the mark on the resumption with an excellent point from McParland.
Firstly, a nine-point victory over Fermanagh in Round 1 of the qualifiers gave manager Kieran McGeeney only the second championship win of his reign.
This evening, they travel to Semple Stadium to face Tipperary, the side who pipped them for promotion to Division 2 in dramatic fashion back in April.
Kevin O'Halloran butchered two chances as Tipp visibly wilted but they edged back in front in the 57th minute with a free from Josh Keane. They would not score again, however, until the 58th minute, during which time Armagh notched four without reply.
It triggered a frantic finish from Tipp, as they desperately tried to find a response and Quinlivan had a couple of late efforts from close-in frees blocked away by the massed Armagh ranks. A brilliant foot-passing movement which criss-crossed the field ended with Clarke hacking the ball over the line. It was too little, too late.
