And while established stars like Riz Ahmed ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story") and Dev Patel ("Slumdog Millionaire") were flagged by the studio, the film ended up casting a newcomer for the coveted role. The young star has previously been seen in the likes of TV's Saving Hope, and he's also got a role in the upcoming Jack Ryan television series.
John August, whose credits include "Big Fish", wrote the new "Aladdin" script. Dan Lin, who produced Ritchie's two "Sherlock Holmes" movies for Warner Bros., is also producing "Aladdin" through his Lin Pictures company. Producer Marc Platt, who worked on Disney's upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, and Chris Montan, a longtime executive music producer for Disney's animated projects from Pocahontas and Frozen, are both consulting on the ambitious project.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword helmer Guy Ritchie is set to direct Aladdin, and casting on the film has been underway for quite some time - with a recent report pointing to the studio having trouble casting the movie's most famous roles of Aladdin and Jasmine. He is repped by CAA and Overbrook Entertainment.
