Originally meeting at the evacuation center at McCay Hall in Cathy's Valley on Sunday, the Red Cross has opened a full overnight shelter at Mariposa Elementary School, in order to provide lodging, meals, health services and more.
Now 98 percent contained, the Alamo fire in San Luis Obispo County has burned 28,687 acres. This rapidly growing blaze near Lake McClure forced Janet Kirkland and her two pets out their home on Hunters Valley Road.
The fire is burning near Lake McClure, a reservoir about 50 miles east of Modesto.
The Brenda Fire that was burning east of Eastlake Blvd in Washoe Valley is out at 632 acres and no structures were damaged.
"We have this abundant grass crop now, and we have not had this type of fuel in many years", Amy Head, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told Bloomberg News. One structure has been destroyed and another has been damaged.
No one has been reported injured.
Daniel Hill of Laytonville got this photo of the DC10 out of McClellan Air Force Base that dumped 5,000 gallons of fire retardent on the Grade Fire Monday evening. Five percent of the fire was contained as of Monday night, the Cal Fire website reported.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company had announced late Sunday it was going to deactivate power lines near the fire as needed, causing periodic power outages, according to the MCSO.
In Northern California, a 900-acre wildfire in Mendocino County has also triggered an evacuation of homes.
The communities of Hunters Valley, Bear Valley and Hornitos are threatened as the fire encroaches on culturally and historically sensitive areas, according to Cal Fire.
