Prior to that, a meeting between both leaders was organized on May 16 in Vienna, with top diplomats from the Minsk Group co-chairing countries hosting the summit.
The preconditions put forward by Armenia in connection with the resumption of negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict's settlement following last year's April escalation did not yield any results, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov took place in Brussels on July 11 upon the initiative of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group Igor Popov (Russia), Stephane Visconti (France) and Richard Hoagland (the US).
Armenian foreign minister Edward Nalbandian has stressed the importance of stabilizing the situation on the Nagorno Karabakh contact line and implementing agreements reached at summits in Vienna and Saint Petersburg.
An agreement was reached to convene the next meeting between the Ministers in September in NY in the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
The highland region of Nagorno-Karabakh is a mostly Armenian-populated enclave inside Azerbaijan's territory. After the military conflict ended in 1994, Azerbaijan lost control over the region. The presidents also agreed to finalize the OSCE investigative mechanism as soon as possible to reduce the risk of further violence.
The co-chairs also proposed to hold a meeting of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia in autumn 2017, he noted, adding that the foreign ministers will bring the proposal of the mediators to the attention of the Presidents. "The talks were resumed and the Azerbaijani side didn't accept any pre-conditions", said the president.
