Sava said infection remains a risk. Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.
The Republican congressional baseball team had been practising for Thursday's annual charity game between Democrats and Republicans when the gunman attacked shortly after 7am. In the immediate aftermath Wednesday the extent of his injuries was not widely known. Scalise was hit, and crawled out of the infield, leaving a trail of blood, colleagues said.
Damage from a bullet occurs when it's traveling.
It is one of the most anticipated events of summer at the Capitol, with Democrats and Republicans splitting the 79 games that have been played over the years 39-39, with one tie.
"Hopefully we can ... band together".
Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation". He says, "They ran right into the fire" and saved a lot of lives.
"That gives me some comfort", he said, of the local police presence.
Mark Sanford, R, SC said, "I think as much as anything, today is an act of solidarity of Republicans and Democrats coming together to say what happened yesterday is not going to cancel this game". He said in a recorded message before it began that everyone was playing hard for Scalise.
Capitol Police officers in Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson later died from his wounds.
Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.
Scalise, 51, was in dire condition when he was first shot, but internal bleeding is under control and the prognosis is positive.
The morning after visiting Scalise in the hospital, Trump said the congressman's challenges are "more difficult" than first thought.
"We've got to carry this on just, you know, beyond today", Hurd said about the bipartisanship that has come up since the shooting. House Speaker Paul Ryan was met with a bipartisan standing ovation when he announced that the game was still on during a meeting on Wednesday.
Scalise's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement saying she was thankful for the "incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes" the family has received since the shooting.
The alleged gunman was killed by authorities, and was identified as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.
"This sick individual does something despicable and it was disgusting what he did, hateful, but for them to all of a sudden be sanctimonious as if they've never seen such a thing before - and I don't even want to go into the president of the United States, in terms of some of the language that he has used".
Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday. Thompson offered his appreciation for the bravery of the U.S. Capitol Police.
She also says she didn't want to discuss her husband's politics. The others were Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey; Zack Barth, a staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams; and Mike Mika, an activist and former congressional staffer.
