The scene of the attack is also right next to London Bridge station, a key railway terminus and a busy interchange on the London Underground network.

Seven people died and 48 were injured on Saturday night when three terrorists unleashed a brutal attack in and around London Bridge.

London police said officers killed the attackers within eight minutes of arriving at the scene.

"All the recent attacks I think have a primarily domestic centre of gravity", Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick told BBC radio.

Neighbors at the site of one raid in Barking said a man who lived there resembled one of the attackers shown in news photographs. "They were stabbing her", witness Gerard Vowls said.

After meeting the governments emergency committee, prime minister Theresa May condemned Islamist extremism and called the ideology a "perversion of Islam", as reported in The Guardian.

The terrorist was a home-grown jihadi who came from Pakistan as a child but was brought up in the United Kingdom, the report said.

Of those, 21 are still in a critical condition.

So far authorities have arrested 12 people for possible links to the attack after staging a series of raids in East London.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility.

"A detachment of Islamic State fighters executed yesterday's London attack", ISIS' Amaq news agency stated.

Police also shot a bystander as they killed the attackers, but said the person was expected to survive.

"The public can expect to see additional police - both armed and unarmed officers - across the capital as you would expect in these circumstances", Mark Rowley, Britain's top counter-terrorism policeman, said in a statement. "I walk into a pub, and I'm like "someone help me, I've just been stabbed". "Evil, evil people", he told The Guardian newspaper.

Vijy Temcykumar also lives on the street and said she heard a "blast" followed by a "shooting sound", adding that she heard three or four shots.

An Australian was among those hospitalised, while a Spaniard escaped with light injuries.

At least four Australians in London were affected, with two injured and concerns about two others.

A vigil for the victims will take place at nearby Tower Bridge on Monday evening.

Britain was already on high alert following the recent attack on a concert by U.S. pop star Ariana Grande in Manchester, northwest England, in which seven children were among the 22 dead. I'm not going to comment on what we knew about the people involved. You will be aware we have a very fast-moving investigation, we've made a number of arrests, we have also carried out lots od searches, we have an enormous amount of forensic material.

"We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people".

Specialist officers are working with victims' families and the coroner to formally identify those who were killed.

He said that he helped a man and his partner, even taking the woman into his arms because she was too upset to walk properly.

The country's major political parties temporarily suspended campaigning with only days to go before the general election.

Saturday's rampage is the latest in a string of attacks to hit Europe, including in Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg, and the French, German and Russian leaders sent messages of support.
