In his article about the interview for HuffPost (formerly the Huffington Post), journalist Yashar Ali - who unearthed the unedited interview footage - describes the question as "startling in its pandering" to the Russian political strongman who, despite the fact that he has been elected, operates as Russia's dictator, according to experts.
Germany's threats are likely much more impactful than Russia's at any rate, given how little direct trade the U.S. and Russian Federation engage in in the first place, and in withholding comment on the matter Putin may be attempting to keep the focus of the debate within the USA on fallout with Germany and other European Union members, rather than Russian Federation directly being unhappy with the idea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a Security Council meeting in Moscow, Russia, Friday, June 16, 2017. And virtually every person we have met on the street says what they respect about you is they feel that you have returned dignity to Russian Federation, that you've returned Russian Federation to a place of respect. Has it taken any sort of personal toll on you? "That is why, I wouldn't say that everything is done only in the manual mode", Putin said. "Putin's obsession is, by his definition, making Russian Federation great again". "But that was just about enough time to confirm that she's still not a great interviewer".
Ali spoke with a former CIA Russia analyst, who was reportedly "taken aback by the last question Kelly asked". He feels that since the breakup of the USSR, Russia has too often ceded ground where it shouldn't have.
To add fuel to fire, Jones released audio he secretly taped during his interactions with Kelly which showed the NBC host flattering him, even saying she found him "fascinating" - a sharp difference to how Kelly has been responding to her critics.
Watch Kelly ask the strangely obsequious question of Putin in the video below.
