The suspect fell on the ground and was then pinned underneath an officer's patrol auto when it was moved forward during the situation.

Officers responded to the site following a report of a shooting possibly involving two men, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

However, only a toy gun was recovered from the scene, investigators said. The exact cause of his death - gunshot wounds or the weight of the cruiser - has not been determined. Police investigated through the night, not contacting the coroner's office to collect the body until Wednesday morning. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

"As the officers approached to make contact with him, several shots were fired and the suspect was struck", said LAPD spokesperson Norma Eisenman.

"Suspect down by vehicle; possible gunfire", the officer said shortly after to a dispatcher.

In the preliminary investigation, witnesses told detectives they saw the man officers shot with a handgun in the minutes leading up to the shooting.
