Pete Carroll said Friday that Colin Kaepernick should be a starter in the National Football League, but he indicated that the Seattle Seahawks have no current plans to sign the quarterback.
The Seattle Seahawks aren't expected to sign Colin Kaepernick, but it's not for a lack of talent. "But we know where he is, who he is, and we had a chance to understand him much more so".
"He's a starter in this league", Carroll said, as transcribed by FOX Sports.
Carroll, though, intimated that Kaepernick's stance last season of first sitting and then kneeling during the anthem - part of an increasing interest in social issues taken by Kaepernick over the a year ago - has no impact in Seattle's decisions. He met with the Seahawks on May 24 about potentially joining the team in a backup role.
It's hard to image Kaepernick wouldn't be a better option to serve as the backup behind Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson than second-year player Trevone Boykin.
Wilson said he would not have a problem with the Seahawks signing Kaepernick and Carroll did not completely close the book on acquiring him at some point in the future. "We are just going to try to do the best we can for guys, whatever opportunities present themselves, and we'll see". "We're in great shape right now and everything's going in great fashion". He also addressed the charge in the article that some on the team believe he and others on the coaching staff don't hold Wilson to the same standard as other players on the team. He's capable of being a championship guy.
Carroll added that he had "never really" spoken to Kaepernick himself.
