The U.S. Navy released the name of the Leap Frogs parachutist who died during a jump that was part of New York Fleet Week on Sunday.
The jump took place around noon at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Navy said Peters was rescued immediately from the water by U.S. Coast Guard personnel who were standing by in vessels to support the aerial demonstration that featured the coordinated parachute jump.
According to CNN, the Coast Guard and the Jersey City Fire Department Marine Unit assisted in bringing the SEAL to safety and rushing him to the hospital, but he would not survive. In the moments before Sunday's tragedy, tourists were snapping photos when things appeared to be going just fine until the Navy Seal's parachute malfunctioned. "I saw the water splash, and apparently, there was a fourth parachutist", said Kils.
Officials still have not officially identified the member of the parachute team, known as the Leapfrogs. It's unclear, however, if Peters disconnected his primary canopy from his harness in order to deploy his reserve parachute in an attempt to resolve a problem, or if there was some other malfunction.
A Navy SEAL has died after his parachute failed to open during an official event in New Jersey.
'My husband and I are in tears tonight, ' she said yesterday. Four SEALs were supposed to land in the park.
Palisades Interstate Parkway police are assisting New Jersey State police in a "parachute incident" at Liberty State Park, local police tweeted around 1 p.m. We will mourn his loss on Monday, a day on which we remember so many of our fallen brothers, and in the days to come.
