The hospital's medical bulletin released on Monday, May 22, announced Hayden's death due to severe cerebral damage and multiple traumatic injuries.
Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden has died, five days after the American was hit by a vehicle while cycling in eastern Italy, his Honda World Superbike team said.
Hayden - whose full name was Nicholas Patrick Hayden - was in intensive care after being hit by a black Peugeot vehicle while training on his bicycle on the Rimini coast May 17.
Authorities in Italy opened an investigation into the accident that injured Hayden.
Over 13 years in the main motor racing series in the world Nicky Hayden spent the 218 races (3 wins, 28 podiums and 1698 points). "The "Kentucky Kid" will be sorely missed by all that ever had the pleasure of meeting him or the privilege to see him race a motorcycle around a track".
His mother Rose and brother Tommy had been at this bedside, along with Hayden's fiancee.
Hayden's death highlights the dangers of cycling on the roads of a region favored by athletes for its hills and scenery.
Two-time MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner tweeted: "Thankful for the time that I was privileged to know you!"
Born in Owensboro, Kentucky on July 30, 1981, Nicky Hayden started racing motorcycles at a young age and by 17, he was racing factory RC45 superbikes.
In addition to being the MotoGP world champion, he received the 2006 Cycle News rider of the year award.
He left the MotoGP series at the end of 2015 to compete in the rival Superbike World Championship (still with Honda), winning the second race in Malaysia a year ago and placing fifth in the championship. We are all so proud of that.
Hayden participated in MotoGP until 2015 before switching to Superbike full-time in 2016.
