An Alabama mail carrier was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after police say she fed neighborhood dogs meaty treats with unsafe ingredients.
The 48-year-old is now charged with aggravated cruelty to animals with investigators examining whether there could have been more dogs targeted.
Susanna Burhans was arrested after a joint investigation by the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Postal Service.
Burhans was booked into the Madison County Jail and released after posting $2,500 bail.
Sheriff's Capt. Mike Salomonsky said they kicked off an investigation following complaint they received two weeks ago.
'Right now, we know for sure there's one dog.
"But there's another neighbour that had a complaint, so there might be two or more", he added.
New Hope resident Ed Glover told WHNT reporter Kristen Conner that Burhans was his mail carrier and he found one of the meatballs beside his mailbox. and discovered that the meatball was filled with nails. Glover showed x-rays he says were taken that day, and nails are clearly visible inside the dog's stomach.
The dog's condition was not reported.
He told the news station he hopes Burhans won't be allowed to return to her job.
