The attackers ran people over with a van on London Bridge, then three assailants lunged with knives seemingly at random at crowds gathered around Borough Market, which is full of restaurants and bars.

The Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats also announced that they were temporarily suspending their campaigns, but Paul Nuttall, the leader of the anti-immigration UKIP, refused to do so "because this is precisely what the extremists would want us to do".

A friend of one of the attackers also told the BBC Asian Network he had reported him to the anti-terror hotline after he began expressing increasingly radical views and justifying terror attacks, but the man said he was never arrested.
The Canadian government is advising citizens to be vigilant in the wake of the attack.
London police arrested 12 people in the Barking district of east London in connection with the attack and raids were continuing there, the force said.

She said providing more firearms for London police wouldn't be a sensible solution to the increased tempo of attacks, saying the strategy of having special mobile units of heavily armed officers is effective.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump cited the London attacks to push his March 6 executive order that would temporarily ban entry into the US of people from six predominantly Muslim countries. 21 out of the 48 injured were in a critical condition after the attack.
A similar attack in March on Westminster bridge, carried out by 52-year-old Briton Khaled Massood, killed four people and injured more than 50.
She said police know the identity of the three attackers but will not release them yet because of the ongoing investigation.

London police said more officers - armed and unarmed - would be deployed across the city, and there would be additional security measures on London's bridges.
