OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) Classes are resuming at a small college in Washington state after protests on the progressive campus attracted national attention and threats.
Founded as a "hippie school" with no grades or majors, Evergreen State College may have been ripe for a student takeover - but academics warn what has happened in Olympia, Washington, could happen anywhere.
"There is no indication last Thursday's threat is in any way connected to recent events on campus", Communications and Public Relations Manager Zach Powers wrote in an email to Mic. College officials said a 911 call was received from an unknown phone number. They demanded Weinstein be punished for his response [!?!] to students who cornered him and called him racist after he refused to leave campus on the anti-white "Day of Absence".
The college was closed for the third consecutive weekday for much of the day as police reviewed new a new threat received over the weekend. "After consultation with law enforcement today, we have determined there is no active threat to campus".
Law enforcement is on duty at Evergreen at all time and "Evergreen staff will be present to provide campus services to resident students and ensure their safety".
A decision will be made Monday night as to whether the campus will be open on Tuesday.
Video posted to social media showed the students shouting and cursing at Mr. Weinstein, accusing him of racism and calling for his resignation.
An opinion piece in the student newspaper, the Cooper Point Journal, included these points: "Police are commissioned to maintain order, the current order of the world, and thus always inherently work in favor of the status quo".
Evergreen has been marred by controversy amid student protests this past month.
