Though Griffin initially held back apologies for the images, in which she appeared stone-faced posing with the bloodied likeness of the president's severed head, she changed her tune by 8 p.m. that evening after seeing the reaction online.
Griffin has co-hosted the holiday special since 2007.
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Hillary Clinton, who won the most votes in the 2016 election, called the photo "vile and wrong".
Meanwhile, Griffin, has apologised profusely in a video message posted on her official Twitter account late on Tuesday. "I went too far", Griffin said in an Instagram video. "The image is too disturbing". Reports published Wednesday said Trump's 11-year-old son, Barron, saw the photos on TV and at first thought they were real. It wasn't amusing. I get it. But hours after the photo's release, Griffin apologized for the incident in a video.
"Tyler and I are not afraid to do images that make noise", Griffin said.
Squatty Potty, a Utah-based bathroom products company, said in a statement Tuesday that it has suspended an ad campaign featuring Griffin. CNN said it was evaluating the matter and had made "no decisions at this point". It's obvious that CNN isn't a fan of President Trump as full-fledged cheerleaders of The Resistance, but it's fair to say that this goes too far.
"I hope we can at least agree that it's never amusing to joke about violence toward anyone, and particularly in this politically-charged moment, toward our president", she said. "I crossed the line". 'It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate'. "It wasn't amusing, I get it", Griffin said, adding that she had already asked Shields to take down the images from their shoot as well.
The President himself has condemned the tweet, saying: "Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself".
"For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in", Cooper tweeted. "I was wrong", she tweeted.
