Pitt will play an autistic space engineer on the hunt for his father who left earth to seek extra-terrestrial life.
So though the film is set in space, describing it as like Heart of Darkness (which was the primary inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now) makes it seem like a less spectacle, and more like a psychologically driven film.
It was announced in February that Pitt would star in the film.
Production on Ad Astra begins in September.
The stars are in line to join The Lost City of Z director James Gray, who co-wrote the script with Fringe writer Ethan Gross. Pitt actually produced The Lost City of Z through his Plan B Productions, and was expected to star in the film but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts.
Pitt can now be seen in the Netflix Original Movie War Machine, which debuted on the service on May 26, 2017. Coming up, the Academy Award victor can be seen as part of the cast of Rob Reiner's Shock and Awe.
