Raymond firefighters responded to search for Hughes beginning at 11:00 p.m. Thursday night.
The Warden Service said Hughes was staying at a camp near the pond while working construction.
Wardens said 52-year-old Christopher Hughes from CT set out alone and without a life jacket on a canoe trip along the pond's eastern shore around 10 p.m.
The search effort began Thursday night on Panther Pond in Raymond and continued Friday morning.
His body was found at 9:15 a.m. Friday, wardens said. A short time later Donahue reported hearing Hughes calling but could not locate him. A friend and co-worker, David Donahue, also from CT, went out on the pond in a separate kayak along with Hughes.
Hughes did not have and was not wearing a lifejacket, according to game wardens. After examination, Hughes body will be transported to CT to a funeral home there. His friends soon heard distressed shouting from the man and called for help.
