Trump stated: "US will cease all implementation of the non-binding draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country". He said American withdrawal "represents a reassertion of American sovereignty".
"Or in really entirely new transaction or terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people and its tax payers".
USA allies voiced dismay over Trump's move, and France, Germany and Italy dismissed his suggestion that the global pact could be revised.
The decision sparked reaction from around the world and locally. Now the only countries outside the accord are the United States, Nicaragua and Syria.
Pruitt sought to promote recent decreases in the United States' carbon dioxide emissions and said that any future deal should focus on exporting technology like hydraulic fracturing and "clean coal" to other countries. As a business leader concerned with creating American jobs, I disagree with the decision to exit the Paris Accord.
The joint statement, the first between the China and the European Union, will commit to cutting back on fossil fuels, developing more green technology and helping raise $100 billion a year by 2020 to help poorer countries cut their emissions.
But one caller, who didn't leave his name, said he supports Trump's decision because he thinks the Paris agreement is a bad deal.
The billionaire said: "In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America. the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord".
Trump has taken a hard stance on climate change; at times calling it a hoax by China.
Leaving the 2015 Paris accord would hardly translate into a substantial increase in new jobs as the fossil fuel industries were highly automated, Xinhua said. "We're going to grow rapidly", he said. "The Trump Administration must not only back the Agreement but be a driving force in tackling climate change".
City Hall, One World Trade Center and the Kosciuszko Bridge were among the buildings adorned in green lights -a public show of support for the 2015 climate agreement, where almost 200 countries agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
