Leopoldo Lopez Sr., right, father of Leopoldo Lopez, and his daughter Diana Lopez, express concern for the jailed Venezuela opposition leader in Madrid, Spain on Friday. But the women - led by several lawmakers - eventually made it to the Interior and Justice ministries.

"They are mobilised as if this was a war", said opposition leader Henrique Capriles, broadcasting from the scene via the Periscope app favoured by protest leaders.

Similar rallies took place in other cities. It was not immediately known if there were casualties.

In Caracas, at least one protester caught fire when other demonstrators set ablaze a military motorcycle.

Tintori is also helping spearhead a women's march against Maduro on Saturday, setting up what threatens to be another confrontation between demonstrators and security forces - prologue, perhaps, to yet another week of tumult.

The death toll from Venezuela's continuing nationwide protests against President Nicolás Maduro has risen to at least 37, Reuters reported on Saturday.

People have waited in long queues to buy basic supplies while restaurants in cities like Valencia remain closed. In Valencia, where the man died, some areas looked like disaster zones with bars on shop windows bent and windows broken.

Demonstrators blame Maduro for the country's plight and the shortages of food and medicine.

Meanwhile, Maduro insists a new constitution is essential to fend off what he refers to as an attempted foreign-sponsored "coup" against his government.

Former president Leonel Fernández (Dominican Republic), Martín Torrijos (Panama), and Ernesto Samper (Colombia) along with former head of the Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, are attempting to relaunch talks between the government and the opposition, after the latter the withdrew from the talks in October, accusing the Government of breaking the agreements reached.

Local news media on Friday carried a video circulating on Twitter of a statue of the late President Hugo Chavez being pulled down.

While the opposition was keeping up momentum, it was unclear how the protests could achieve their aims after demonstrations in 2014 failed to dislodge Maduro.

"We are students, not terrorists", students chanted, as they marched in Caracas. Weeks of violent protests asking for Madu.

"We must stop ignoring the just cry of the people suffocated by an intolerable crisis", Mr Dudamel, who is serving as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's musical director, said.

Officials say violence around the protests, and the opposition's unwillingness to hold talks, left Maduro with no choice but to shake up Venezuela's governing apparatus.

President Trump's national security adviser H.R. McMaster met with the president of Venezuela's National Assembly at the White House on Saturday as the embattled South American country faces mounting social and economic turmoil.
