A Warren County, Utah, woman is accused of leaving her two young kids in the trunk of her auto while she went shopping on Thursday.
Police said they received a call Thursday after a witness saw the woman stuff the children in the trunk and leave her vehicle at a parking lot.
Once Castillo returned to the auto, she was interviewed by police and booked into Weber County Jail for investigation of child abuse.
Castillo was charged with four counts of child abuse, a Class C misdemeanor for which she could face jail time and fines. "Several good Samaritans observed this and came to the aid of the children".
Police said welfare services were contacted and the children were turned over to a responsible party. They heard the kids scratching and making other noises inside the auto and guided them to reach for an emergency latch to free themselves.
A witness reported that the woman locked the 2-year-old and 5-year-old in the trunk, then went inside the Wal-Mart, according to Riverdale police.
"I was shocked, I was shaken, and I was mad", Maw told the affiliate.
The mother showed up and said her babysitter didn't show up, according to a witness.
