Rockies prospect Josh Fuentes learned a valuable lesson Friday.
Blake Beavan allowed just two hits over 71/3 innings, leading the Binghamton Rumble Ponies over the Hartford Yard Goats in a 1-0 win on Saturday at Binghamton, N.Y.
The hilarious result of the pitch was overshadowed by the ruling of the home-plate umpire after Fuentes made a decision to take a random (sarcastic?) swing as the ball continued to roll down toward home plate. But Yard Goats batter Josh Fuentes chose to not even give Burns the opportunity. Alas, a timeout had not been called. Unbeknownst to Fuentes, because it was a live pitch, the umpire had no choice but to call a strike and Fuentes was out which ended the 8th inning for the Yard Goats.
The catcher calmly retrieved Burns' feeble throw and tagged Fuentes for the inning's final out, completing what has to be one of the worst strikeouts in baseball history.
The Yard Goats went on to lose the game, 5-4, and Fuentes's strikeout was soon mocked by baseball fans on social media, SportsCenter, and even his team's own Twitter account.
