Mueller, who is familiar and well-regarded by both political parties, served as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013.

Even the White House said in a statement that it was "look [ing] forward" to Mueller's investigation and the conclusion it expected he would reach.
Russian Federation has denied US intelligence agencies' conclusion that it interfered in the election campaign to try to tilt the vote in Trump's favor.
Rosenstein can expect to be pressed by lawmakers in both parties about why he made a decision to name a special counsel, which came as a surprise to senior Republicans, including John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking GOP senator.
"We still need to get whatever documents that Comey may have or that [Acting FBI Director Andrew] McCabe now has, obviously they were FBI documents", Lankford said. Trump wrote, misspelling the word counsel as he referred to former President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
However another answer on that subject seemed both more specific and perhaps ambiguous.
"This is the single greatest witch-hunt of a politician in American history!"
He said he respected the special counsel appointment but also said it "hurts our country terribly".
All that doesn't provide Mr. Mueller with quite the unfettered license that the independent counsels did in the Iran-Contra and Whitewater investigations - those were authorized under a post-Watergate law that Congress allowed to expire - but Mr. Rosenstein's letter announcing the appointment should provide him with the authority he needs to investigate both any illegal conduct during the campaign and any subsequent attempts to obstruct justice. Despite the president's furious reaction, some fellow Republicans welcomed Mueller's appointment and expressed hopes it would restore some composure to a capital plunged in chaos.
Rosenstein appointed Mueller under a statute used in 1999, when John C. Danforth was appointed to investigate allegations of government wrongdoing in the siege at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Trump later told NBC that he was going to fire Comey no matter what Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions had recommended.
The appointment of a special counsel to take over the Russian Federation investigation was widely praised by Democrats and Trump's fellow Republicans.
"I welcome his role at the Department of Justice", Ryan added.
"By having somebody like Bob Mueller head whatever investigation assures the American people that there's no undue influence, be it here, be it at the other end of Independence Avenue or within the Justice Department or FBI", said Burr, whose committee is conducting its own investigation. Chaffetz has invited Comey to testify before the House Oversight Committee next week.
Still, the Senate investigations were sure to continue. "A special prosecutor can not take the place of a truly independent outside commission", Pelosi told reporters.
