While on Australian talk show Sunrise, Tom dropped the exclusive news when asked about gossip surrounding the sequel: "It's true".
LOS ANGELES •Actor Tom Cruise, still feeling the need for speed, said in an interview that a sequel to his 1986 military action film Top Gun is "definitely happening".
According to Deadline, Bruckheimer met with Cruise to discuss fitting "Top Gun 2" into his schedule during an on-set visit of "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" previous year. "I'm here, you asked me, and so I'm telling you, this is going to happen". "It's happening. It's definitely happening".
Despite mixed reviews, the original Top Gun was a massive success a the box office - earning more than $450 million worldwide against a budget of less than $30 million. Even though Cruise is still handsome and essentially ageless, we can also assume that this won't be a plot similar to the first.
He struggles to balance life, responsibility and a love affair while competing at the Navy's fighter-weapons school.
Get ready to fly back in to the danger zone - because a "Top Gun" sequel is happening.
A Top Gun sequel has been in development for years before gaining traction in 2012. In fact, Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted about it in January 2016 saying they were together to "discuss a little Top Gun". After all, in 2016 Cruise told a United Kingdom talk show host there were discussions about it.
Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the original, had been dropping hints too. For now, check out the above video announcement from the star; Cruise next arrives in theaters on June 9 in The Mummy.
