The Indian cricket team for next month's ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in United Kingdom has been named by the Board of Control for Cricket in India selectors here today.
Announcing the squad, selection committee chairman MSK Prasad said " it was an easy team to pick as it has shaped up well in the last four months."May be one place here and there.
KL Rahul, who had grown into one of India's most valuable players across formats past year, was not among the touring party. I think he has got one of the best brains, and is the best person to guide (skipper) Virat (Kohli).
India's cricket board on Sunday approved the country's participation in the Champions Trophy, ending speculation about the team staying away from the tournament because of a financial dispute with the International Cricket Council.
Rohit sustained a thigh injury during the One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand in October a year ago while Shami's last appearance in ODIs was in the 2015 World Cup semi-finals.
In the absence of the injured KL Rahul, Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane will compete for the opener slots. He has been a regular opener for India in the last 12 months. Therefore, the onus of holding the innings together will fall on the shoulders of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh in case the top order doesn't fire. Following them, as a finisher, will come Kedar Jadhav.
Kedar Jadhav: Jadhav will support the team down the order as this would be his second tour overseas.
In the all-rounder department, India will have the services of Hardik Pandya, Ravi Jadeja, Ravi Ashwin.
R Ashwin who missed the IPL owing to a sports hernia was included in the side along with Yuvraj Singh.
Shami, whose last one-day global was the 2015 World Cup semi-final, replaced leg-spinner Amit Mishra while Sharma came in for opener Lokesh Rahul, who is recuperating from shoulder surgery.
"We respect IPL but in the longer format, we have to also consider the English conditions that we are playing in".
Jasprit Bumrah: Bumrah is having a decent season in the tenth edition of IPL.
Choosing between a third spinner and an extra batsman was expected to be the major topic of discussion as the other members were automatic selection.
New Zealand will play hosts England in Group A, as well as Australia and Bangladesh.
