Bowden's sister told CNN affiliate KARK in Little Rock that her brother "didn't want to come out".
James Arthur Bowden, 42, surrendered Thursday afternoon at a house near Dardanelle, Arkansas State Police said in a statement.
Sadler said Bowden released a female hostage before he surrendered about five hours after the standoff began.
The causes of death for the other two other victims, both female, have not been released. Dardanelle is about 65 miles west of Little Rock.
"He had mental problems", the elder Bowden said of his son.
Two others were also killed.
The deputy was found by a passerby, who notified police.
When other officers arrived at the Gum Springs Road home, they saw two bodies outside, Sadler said.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge expressed their condolences to the deputy's family and praised his decades in law enforcement.
The governor ordered the state flag to be lowered to half-staff as a tribute to Mainhart.
Mainhart severed 4 years in the United States Air Force as a Security Forces Officer.
His "bravery and dedication to duty was clear and did not falter even at the risk of death", the proclamation reads.
This information has not been confirmed by any law enforcement agency. Sheriff Bill Gilkey said at the news conference.
Bowden was taken into custody about 2:40 p.m. local time, police spokesman Bill Sadler said.
Police released a name of the suspect Thursday, but it became clear later in the day it may not have been correct.
Bowden's father also told the TV station that the deputy had fired a Taser at the suspect, who allegedly thought he had been shot and fired back, fatally wounding the officer.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon after a standoff with police.
Bowden is now being held at the Conway County Jail.
