The 23-year-old played with a great quarterback in Drew Brees with the Saints, and now he will play with another great quarterback in Tom Brady.
After a blowout win over the Rams past year, during which Cooks didn't see a single target, he said, "Closed mouths don't get fed".
But Cooks hasn't had time to think about the expectations for his new offense, and has instead immersed himself in the New England playbook since the team acquired him for a first- and third-round pick in last month's NFL Draft. "He's just an awesome quarterback and I'm glad I have the opportunity to play with him".
"His attention to detail and how focused he is". I look at him and I try to thrive for and to be just like that. "But to see him now, in person and his study habits, is awesome".
With offseason workouts underway, Cooks has gotten a chance to work directly with Brady. "So the best thing for me is to learn the whole concept so when it comes time to know everything".
Significance to his jersey number 14 after wearing No. 10 in New Orleans: "No big significance at all, really". I wore seven in college. "So every opportunity I can get to study the playbook, I do". I didn't even think about asking him.
"I wouldn't necessarily say I'm watching one specific role", Cooks said.
Cooks did have a chance to observe Brady when he practiced with the New England Patriots as a member of the Saints.
"I'm excited to join a group like this", he said, adding that he loves the way the Patriots run their organization. "It's all about getting better individually and taking care of business, but I'm sure that time will come".
"We spoke to a few teams, and we weren't in a position where we felt like, 'We gotta make this trade or else, ' " Payton said during the NFC coaches breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore back in March. Whatever mission that may be, I don't know, but we're on a mission. I originally grew up in the West Coast, so obviously I'm across the country now. "I live in OR now during the offseason, so I'm used to a little bit of cold, rainy days, but it's a little different out here, so we'll see".
