It's a novel idea, but also one that if successful could be incorporated in every race - much like stages and double-file restarts. The victor of the three stages - one of which is the race victor - will advance to the main event.
"It's a little bit of a throwback event in many ways, and I think fans enjoy it because there's no holds barred", NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip told For The Win. From there, a ten lap shootout will give one last guaranteed spot to the victor. The race, which featured an intense finish between Davey Allison and Kyle Petty, is commonly known as One Hot Night. A signature event that was special is now anything but, instead just another race that is part of an overly long schedule that stretches from mid-February to mid-November.
The race will feature three 20-lap segments and one 10-lap segment. This particular arrangement has never been seen before, but 13 past events have featured 70 laps, including the inaugural event in 1985.
Unlike traditional races, only 10 drivers will be allowed to compete in the final, 10-lap segment for the win.
What is the All-Star Race format?
Charlotte is a multipurpose venue that, in addition to the 1.5-mile oval used by NASCAR, also features a 2.25-mile road course, a quarter-mile drag strip, and a almost half-mile dirt track. The victor of each of the first three will be locked into the final 10 auto, 10 lap stage, providing they stay on the lead lap.
RIR's ¾-mile, D-shaped oval hosts two Cup races a year, a day race in the spring and the fall night race, which will be September 9 this year. Each team will have three sets of "prime" tires with an additional "optional" set of softer tires to use at their discretion. However, if a team chooses to use the softer tires going into the final stage, the cars have to start behind those with the regular tires. Additionally, the compound gives a three- to five-tenths of a second advantage per lap, out of the box. Two drivers from last year's class, Noah Gragson and Matt Tifft, have already earned full-time rides.Twelve of the drivers who began as NASCAR Next nominees have gone on to win a series race. It has gone through many iterations, each trying to both enhance the entertainment value and mull possible changes for future season's points races. This year's expedition may determine the fate of different compounds of tires in NASCAR, and will certainly provide a reason to watch for many.
