New Delhi welcomed the court's unanimous decision on Jadhav, while Islamabad said it had informed the ICJ that it did not accept the court's jurisdiction in matters related to national security.
A retired Pakistani judge had also told Dawn newspaper that the decision taken by the court was "alarming" since the "ICJ does not have jurisdiction".
Jadhav was reportedly arrested from Pakistan's Balochistan province on March 3, 2016.

"Case against Jadhav by Pakistan was a sham and was in gross violation of worldwide law as his execution was ordered by a kangaroo court without consular access".
"We are very happy with the world court's verdict in Kulbhushan Jadhav's case".

Harish Salve was also part of the team that successfully argued at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against a bid by Marshall Islands to sue India for violating the nuclear disarmament obligations.
The ICJ's rulings are final and binding. The ICJ had on Thursday said that the execution of Jadhav be placed in abeyance until the final verdict is out. "It has completely been exposed and it has become crystal clear that this case was concocted".
In November past year, Pakistan withdrew six officials from its mission in Delhi after they were outed as suspected spies by India.
Zakaria said Pakistan's reply to the court was submitted in line with Article 36 of the Vienna Convention. "The Court further observes that the existence of a 2008 bilateral agreement between the parties on consular relations does not change its conclusion on jurisdiction", it said.
The ICJ on Thursday allowed India's petition that Pakistan be directed not to execute Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was handed a death sentence by a Pakistani military court in April this year. He added the rights invoked by India under the Vienna Convention are plausible. "In those circumstances, the court is satisfied that there is urgency in the present case".
