Earlier today we got the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming Marvel team-up series The Defenders [watch it here], and now we have more Marvel TV news, as Hulu has announced today that it has given a series order to the Runaways adaptation. Gossip Girl showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are leading the show, which will star Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virgina Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Allegra Acosta. Schwartz and Savage will serve as Co-Showrunners/writers and will executive produce the series along with Marvel's Head of Television, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
The pilot for "Runaways" was picked up this past summer, along with a full-season script, signaling promise for the series to go the way. The group includes a video game-playing nerd, a goth loner, a handsome girl who embodies privilege, and a jock heartthrob. Currently, its planned to premiere in the winter of 2018. Runaways follows a rag-tag group of teenagers who "must unite against a common foe - their parents".
Also below is a first look at the cast, and while Old Lace is nowhere to be seen, it's fair to say the cast looks a lot like their comic book counterparts. The show takes place in the near future and tells the story of the first human mission to Mars, and the challenges that come with interplanetary colonization. The series is about space exploration and colonization, but also "the human spirit", in case you anxious this would just be some unfeeling voyage into the void. "About our indomitable need to reach for unknown horizons". Moss has confirmed that she's signed a five-to-seven year contract for the show, which would be a hell of a long time to spend with a show already so distressing and soul-crushing even in its first three episodes (read my review of its chilling political parallels here).
