Fifteen people have been admitted to hospital, said one policeman, while rescue teams are working at the site.
A dilapidated Portuguese-era bridge connecting Sanvordem (a tributary of river Zuari) and Curchorem villages in South Goa district, collapsed. Reports state that the unfortunate incident had occurred when a crowd had assembled on the bridge in an attempt to dissuade a person who was seemingly trying to commit suicide on Thursday.
"More people are feared to have been trapped under the collapsed portion of the bridge", a police officer said.
This is published unedited from the IANS feed. "However, we do not have the exact number of people present on the bridge when it collapsed", Parrikar told reporters here. During the search of sufferers, fire personnel recovered the body of a man who is Santosh Vandar.
"Search and rescue ops have been intensified", Singh tweeted. Total no of casualties are still not clear while rescue operation is underway.
According to the onlookers some of the people also swam across the river to save their lives.
The bridge was reportedly more than 60 years old and was banned from use.
The exact number of persons missing was still not known five hours after the accident, even as one body has been fished out of the river. While there was no breakthrough during the entire day, the third body was retrieved around 4.30 pm, police said. "The search operation was called off around midnight yesterday due to poor visibility". Nine divers had been rushed to Curchorem, a navy spokesperson said.
