Tipu Sultan Mosque's controversial Imam Maulana Noor-ur Rehman Barkati, who had threatened "jihad" if India was declared a Hindu Rashtra and refused to remove the red beacon from his vehicle, was sacked from the post by the mosque's trustee board on Wednesday.
Noor -ur Rehman Barkati was an influential figure who owed his clout to the proximity with chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
The communication accused Mr. Barkati of physically abusing the co-trustee of the mosque and making comments "that can incite people to violence".
Last week he warned of a "jihad" if India was declared a Hindu Rashtra and refused to take off the red beacon from his auto, defying a central government decision.
Speaking at a hurriedly convened press conference just after the trustee board presser, the former Imam blamed the entire episode of his termination on Trinamool Congress MPs Sultan Ahmed and Nadimul Haque and library minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury and said that he would meet Mamata Banerjee after she returns from Delhi.
Condemning Barkati's fatwa against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said: "After all, he is the Prime Minister of the country and his chair should be respected".
"As his recent remarks were very shameful for Muslim community and derogatory for national interests, we have served a termination notice to him today with an immediate effect".
Later Imam Barkati drew flak when he expressed his wish to fight for Pakistan.
Imam is the second generation of his family that was created for administrating the Namaaz for the Royal Family.
Shahezada Anwar Ali, Mautawalli (religious head) of the mosque's trustee board, said this on Tuesday, adding that he had recommended Barkati's removal.
When contacted, Barkati's secretary said, "Imam is not well".
"There is no reason to think that he is above the law", he added. He is an Imam for all namazis who may have different political beliefs.
"No, there was no political pressure on me to remove the red light".
"I have been an Imam for over 30 years whereas the 12-year-old trustee board is only honorary".
Barkati went on to say, "My Muslims brothers are with me".
