More than 60 fire crews responded.
Three firefighters were trapped during the fight and were soon rescued, witnesses said, adding that they saw them being loaded onto stretchers. One was a priority one transport, while the other was a priority two. "But we're gonna continue to do the good job we always do", he said. But the fire required responders to evacuate. At least one of the firefighters was airlifted to San Antonio Military Medical Center, according to initial reports.
Hood said two other firefighters were transported to area hospitals - one a priority one transport and the other a priority two.
A second firefighter, part of the rapid intervention rescue team, was taken to University Hospital in serious condition, firefighters said.
The San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association released a statement on Facebook, asking the public for prayers. Firefighters later stood by saluting an ambulance.
A procession was held at the scene for Deem, a 6-year veteran of the department.
So far, officials have not said what led to Deem's death. "That's not what we do, but we had the risk of losing an additional 15 to 20 firefighters if we did not go defensive on this fire".
Guerra had hoped the inferno wouldn't reach his business, but moments later flames could be seen inside.
He said when he walked outside the heavy smoke was pitch black.
