Film crews and production vehicles for the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why", the stage on Bayview Street in San Rafael, Calif. on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.
Revolving around the sensitive subject of teen suicide, the series tells the story of Hannah Baker's life, or more accurately, the reasons that she ended her life. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heart-wrenching story of a teenage life that will deeply affect viewers. This week, 13 Reasons Why came out, and Gomez wrote on Instagram that she "couldn't be more overwhelmed with pride and joy".
"Something Jay tapped into with the novel", says Tom McCarthy (director of last year's Oscar-winning feature Spotlight), "is that in high school everyone's a bit paranoid, everyone's hiding things and deciding who they can share with and who they can open up with".
Set in a prosperous but boring American Anytown, it tells the story of Hannah (Katherine Langford), a high school student who's recently committed suicide.
The series features Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Kate Walsh, Brain D'Arcy, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro, and Tommy Dorfman.
If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, there is always someone to talk to. Despite Hannah's intentions, the people involved with the tapes became so caught up with their own concerns that they failed to learn not to make the same mistakes again. Her vitality makes you hope against hope that the suicide will be proven false by season's end. He's summoned by the guidance counselor and the administration and gets taken away from class. Hannah, in her tape, warns him to stick around for a later tape. In fact, I'm eagerly awaiting the cable television adaptation of "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman in April, a show that has supposedly been in the works since shortly after the book was published back in 2001. Very enclosed after Hannah's death, the two youngsters explained that " We see the difference between the Clay before and after thanks to the flashbacks and his quest to find the truth about his friend promises already to be as intense as touching.
Tommy Dorfman (Ryan): "She's super humble and supportive and obviously has a lot of experience to share", he shared.
Because the series deals with bullying, abuse, and teen suicide, it will be interesting to see how this series is received. It would be one thing if the series was sharper about calling out the inconsistencies of its headstrong kids in an insightful way, but it continually takes them at their word, revealing the inconsistency to be ingrained in the writing itself. She maintains her optimistic attitude by "surrounding myself with people that are positive and that I look up to".
13 Reasons Why is available to stream on Netflix now.
